Abstract: Bamboo species have not been prioritized for research in Bhutan and remain understudied. The number of herbaria specimen collections are underrepresented. It is likely new species remain to be discovered in the less accessible areas of the country. This checklists includes a review and synthesis of published literature and includes 33 species in 15 genera. In Bhutan bamboos are extensively used for a wide range of purposes. The larger species occur naturally or are cultivated up to 1600 m, and are used for poles, as edible shoots, and animal fodder. Small species occur naturally in the forest understory up to 3400 m, and are also frequently cultivated around villages, or form extensive areas of monotypic bamboo pastureland. Common uses for smaller species include basketry, house roofs, walls and floors, edible shoots and fodder.
