Habitat: Solitary, scattered, or gregariously and terrestrial.

Description: Cap: 5-10 cm, convex, becoming broadly convex or nearly flat as it matures, pale grey to yellow brown or olive brown, and develops darker when bruised. Hymenophore: Bright yellow pores, not bruising, 2-3 round pores per mm, tubes to 10 mm deep. Stem: 5-11 cm tall, 1-2 cm thick, more or less equal, little tapered towards the apex, becomes brownish with age or on handling, bright yellow, discolouring brownish in age, solid, yellow mycelium at the base. Flesh: Yellow, not staining blue on exposure. Spore Print: Brownish.

Comments: It is easily identified by its yellow pores and flesh and its beautifully patterned golden-yellow stem. The cap colour varies considerably but is usually some shade of grey, olive, or yellow- olive. B. retipes is bitter tasting and B. auriflammeus is similar but has a brownish-orange to brilliant golden cap and creamy or pink tinged flesh. All of these stain your fingers yellow when handled.
